Agritourism and biological farm on Saint Francis trail in Umbria.
Splendidly situated on the top of a hill, this agritourism offers a panoramic view over the natural Umbrian hills around Valfabbrica. There are three comfortable apartments that sleep 2 + 2, all three furnished in the 'arte povera' style.
This organic agritourism is one of the view real agriturismo remaining in Umbria, still holding on to the idea of hospitality on a working farm. Here you can feel at home, surrounded by real life and real things. The way it once used to be in Umbria.

The pool is in a spectacular position, overlooking valleys and lower hills, exposed to the sun from early morning to sunset. The pool is totally fenced with a low child safe fence. The farm lies in the centre of the triangle Assisi (20 km), Perugia (25 km) and Gubbio (25 km) near to Valfabbrica. The Saint Francis Peace Trail passes here. I am happy to provide feedback. We found the hilly countryside at Il Biologico to be stunning scenery, so beautiful I couldn't help taking many photos! The owners were welcoming and helpful as to what things to do in the area and how to get to the places we wanted to see. As well, the food at Il Biologico restaurant was very good and organic including the lovely wine. We were able to buy some home made organic cheeses, and olive oil to go with the wonderful dark bread made by our hostess. We love animals so the 5 cats and 5 dogs were a pleasure for us. We didn't get to know the 300 sheep but took photos of them roaming the fields. You must like animals to get the most from your stay at Il Biologico. It is a very real, close to the earth experience amoung some of the most beautiful countryside in Italy. Our hostess did so much for us including 2 clothing washes which we appreciated very much as we arrived at Il Biologico with a weeks worth of dirty hiking clothes. You must also check out the weaving products such as scarves, hats and table runners.
We certainly recommend Il Biologico for those who like animals and a real farm experience with caring people. The nearby village was exactly the right size to enjoy the coffee bars and a little shopping.
All the best,
Barb and Don
Marjatta speaks English well and is a very pleasant hostess, always willing to explain or advice. Almost every day she checked in on us just to hear our plans and to ask how we were doing. We ate four times in her restaurant which was very tasty and cosy, also together with the other guests. The informaton regarding daytrips and walking possibilities was good. The apartment is simple but ok. The pool is clean, hardly any chloride, good sunbeds, lovely views, just top!
A good check up of the apartments would be advisable. A renovation can be too drastioc, but just to check whether everything is on order and works well. We didn’t manage to get the TV working, for instance, but this may have been our problem.
Dear Saskia and Willemijn,
As we knew from last year, this is just a good place to be! Owners are friendly, hospitable, caring and the kitchen is just perfect. Also its position with the amazing views around is very relaxing. We felt at home, like last year and would definitely want to come back again.
Best regards, Hannie & Jan
Dear Willemijn and Saskia,
Our stay in Il Biologico was wonderful. Such a pleasant and hospitable owner, Marjatta (originally from Finland). She prepared the most lovely meals every day. We ate her Italian meals every day outside, with views over the valley and drinking the local wine from Pasquale. It was the highlight of the day. In the morning she would knock on our door softly so the children would not wake up, with home made whole wheat bread, something you can not buy in the area. Our children also enjoyed themselves in the pool as well as with the cheese making and milking the sheep. When it was very hot - and it was the week we stayed - we enjoyed cooling down in the pool. In short: a lovely spot we will recommend whole heartedly, also beacuse of the lovely owners.
With best wishes, Charlotte and Gert
Hello Saskia and Willemijn,
We have enjoyed our stay in Valfabbrica, we stayed at Il Biologico. The area is beautiful of course. We had a lovely view over the Umbrian lhills.
The ground floor apartment was ideal. It stayed nice and cool which was excellent during this hot period. It was simple but well furnished. We did find a few things that needed repairing, especially the fly screens and the bathroom lock.
The reception by Marjatta and Pasquale was very friendly, kind, hospitable and helpful. In one word they spoiled us. Breakfast and dinner were top. We let them spoil us the whole day long. The cooking lesson, making pasta, and making cheese was a real joy. The swimming pool was nice to cool down and lovely position with beautiful views. Just to mention a small remark … the road leading to the property was not very equal and could do with a little improvement. The maintenance could do with some attention, according to us.
All in all, as you can understand from the above, we had a very good holiday here and we will certainly come back again in case we will visit Umbria again.
Best wishes, Hannie and Jan
Il Biologico was very nice, very friendly owners with lots of tips about what to do in the area without ever infringing on our privacy. We had lovely meals in their restaurant. The apartment was good, good beds. Only the shower could do with a small renovation. We also enjoyed the fact it was so small scale, we had the pool to ourselves occasionally. We were looking for peace and quiet and found exactly that. From here it was easy to visit Perugia and Gubbio.
Best wishes, Audrey
The host is a very friendly lady. We enjoyed ourselves very much and had 5 times breakfast and dinner at the farm. We had a totally different meal each time. Wild asparagus, pasta with nettles and her own ricotta. Excellent and very nice. Our daughter was allowed to help making cheese and ricotta and she loved it. The place is beautiful in the hills and we had a very good holiday. Quiet and peaceful with the 5 of us. The weather was not great but we did get to swim (my husband did). It was a wonderful week, thanks for all your good care!
Best wishes, Wilmien and family
I liked your quick and easy booking and confirmation procedure. What was included and the itinerary were somewhat unclear to me. The cost of it all turned out very good and I found the farm in the end but I'm not sure if everyone would have succeeded. Reception was friendly and warm. The accommodation great!!! Really terrific! The online story is inferior to the real experience :) The food was very good. I received maps of the area and lots of information on walks and cultural activities. On my way I had stopped at a supermarket to get some things, maybe an idea to mention on a website that the nearest one is about 7km away.
All in all fantastic experience and I'll make sure to come back.
Hello Saskia and Willemijn,
We and the kids had a super time. We were all very happy.
Kind regards, Emile
Dear Saskia & Willemijn,
We returned yesterday from a week's trip to Umbria. We enjoyed ourselves a lot at Il Biologico. We had some wonderful dinners and have been entertained quite a bit. A recommendable place!
Regards, Eva & Gerard
Hello Willemijn, Saskia,
We enjoyed Il Biologico a lot. The farmer and his wife have created a small paradise where we felt at home. Being on top of a hill guaranteed a cool breeze even on the hottest days. The apartments do not really have their own private terrace, but since they are so relaxed and there is so much space around, this did not create a problem.
They also have a vary curious mix of cats and dogs which our children enjoyed a lot. Maybe not everybody enjoys their company, though.
With kind regards, Dien and Maurits
Hello dear Saskia and Willemijn,
We enjoyed our holiday with Marjatta a lot. She is a lovely person, very hospitable and a very good cook. We stayed in the smaller apartment upstairs, small but good. There even was a watercooker, a hairdryer and a ventilator.
Some remarks for improvement:
The mattrass in the bedroom is not good. One can feel the spirals. Since I have some back problems we put the infloatable beds of the children on top of the mattrass and the children slept on the sofabad in the kitchen, which is of a good quality. It would be nice to have shutters or heavy curtains also in the kitchen. The children slept here and woke up early because of the sun light coming in! We did not particularly like the cats. They even tried to enter the apartment and came to the restaurant to look for food when people ate there. My daughter did not mind at all. She enjoyed the animals a lot and even wanted to take one of the dogs home with her. It was easy to book the house with you. Good luck with your business!
Best regards, Stev
Dear Saskia and Willemijn,
Last week we stayed at Marjatta's lovely agriturismo. The apartment Basilico is beautiful, complete and we enjoyed the company of the other guests. Marjatta and her husband are very friendly and helpful. We had 3 wonderful meals at the restaurant.
It' wasn't our best week though. We also have some negative remarks:
- Lack of privacy. There is no private terrace for each apartment. It felt like being on holiday all together.
- Noisiness. Upstairs one of the children woke up very early. Obviously he played on the floor and we enjoyed all his games in the morning. We didn't here anybody talking or crying or something but heard all steps, games falling etc. Nothing anybody could help, but it may be wise not to have very small children upstairs.
Kind regards and naybe until next time, Frank and Heleen
Hi Saskia and Willemijn,
We had a lovely holiday in Umbria. Beautiful region and friendly people! Not too turistic and generally very quiet. We enjoyed Il Biologico a lot: clean, neat, owners are friendly, helpful and sincerely interested in us. The apartment was more then we expected. We appreciated the extra touch: some coffee, sugar, tea, soap, sun cream and a first aid kid. It was all there. We had a small scorpion in the shower, luckily it was small! It now plays hapopily outside. Also for these encounters one goes to Umbria! The directions were good and the dinner upon arrival was just perfect.
Thank you for advising us this wonderful location.
we had a fantastic week in Il Biologico. It0s a pity we only booked one week! The apartment was comfortable and clean. The surroundings and views were heavenly. Marjatta is a good host and a very good cook. Her meals are delicious. Unfortunately there were many wasps around the pool and the dogs and cats are a bit too close now and then. Your help was efficient and correct. We'll be back!
Kind regards, Katrijn, Geert and kids
Dear Saskia and Willemijn,
I very much enjoyed Il Biologico. It's peace and quiet, the beautiful views, very much in the country side but still not too far from Perugia and Assisi. The host is very felxibel and kind. The apartment is well furnished. It looks better then what I expected from the pictures. I may well return one day!
Thank you for helping me plan this trip.
We enjoyed our stay with Marjatta and Pasquale! The grounds are very large with a lot of opportunity to walk and enjoy the views and the nice villages in the area. We do recommend anybody to visit a sagra! We enjoyed a nice breakfast every morning together with some good tips from Marjatta! Our apartment had all we needed. The only thing that maybe can be looked at is the extremely small shower with curtain. The pool was very clean and it was very quiet here. The negative point, though they did not in any way disturb our holiday: there are a lot of flies and the dogs left something smelly behind now and then&ldots;.
Say hi to Marjatta and keep up the good work!
Kind regards, Barbara
From before 2009:
Dear Saskia and Willemijn,
We have had a super holiday Valfabricca at Il Biologico. Nice apartment, great surroundings, lovely pool and Marjatta is a great host who cooks like an angel. Pity we only booked for a week. For our part it might have lasted 3 weeks. To thank her we sent Marjetta 'klompen' but we haven't yet heard from here. Hopefully she did receive them. A small point of attention: from the main road the driveway of the agriturismo isn't pointed out very well. It is hard to see the sign. There is also some litter, wich is a shame, because the terrain and the agricultura are beautiful and well looked after. Also our compliments for your website.
We will in any case recommend your site.
Kind regards, Nadja and Peter
As written before: we had a fantastic week. Splendid surroundings, very hospitable family, great apartment, wonderful food. After our arrival (we were very late) we were immediately able to join the table and enjoy our first biological meal together with another Dutch family. Save one night we (to give Marjatta a bit of a rest) we ate every meal at her place and loved it! I immediately set out to hunt for a Umbrian cookbook. In the meantime i also have a little supply of biological olive oil. A shame I only read about your favorite ice cream parlour in Perugia on returning home. When you wrote about it we were already in the area. Ginger ice cream with Spanish pepper I didn't really want to miss that. We enjoyed, Gubbio, Assisi and Orvieto. Apart from that we took a few delightful mountain hikes for wich every time we drove in the directions of Monte Subasio.
We had a nice climb and relished the quietness of the mountain meadows. What a delight.
Your weblogs are always read with pleasure.
Kind regards, Edith
A short note after our holiday at Il Biologico. We really liked it there and we look back at a very pleasant time, also because the owners have a great feeling for service, contact, care etc. I also would like to - it was nice by the way to meet you personally - thank you for your advice and support to secure a place for us at this well suited location. It was our first contact with you and your activities, and another thing we enjoyed! We are not visiting italy every year but as soon as we start thinking about that direction, our great experiences at Il Biologico will surely surface again and we will make sure to visit your website.
Good luck with your activities and regards,
Ton and Olga
In the meantime we have arrived back in Holland. We would like to let you know that we tremendously enjoyed our stay at Il Biologico. Perfect location, well arranged, very kind and friendly people, lovely food!
We also enjoyed communicating with you.
We would like to thank you for pointing Il Biologico out to us. We have had a very nice week there. The owners are very hospitable and there is a nice informal atmosphere. Nice big apartment in great surroundings and a restaurant. The cooking course was great, also came at a great moment since there were some showers wich past unnoticed. Marjatta is a skilled cook and is very able at transferring her knowledge. Also Pasquale contributed to the introduction of some real italian pasta sauces by preparing two of his family recipes together with us. It was a nice and unique way to get to know Umbria. We will make sure to recommend the villainumbria website to everybody and especially Il Biologico.
Kind regards, Evert and Sylvia
In the end it didn't work out: make an appointment with you while in Il Biologico. A pitty, but such a holiday flew by. We especially enjoyed our first week in Umbria, the hospitality of the owners, their farm, the splendid food. It was like we were at home and could be ourselves. If we are to return to Umbria, it will undoubtedly be a new visit to Il Biologico, even if we normally don't visit the same place twice. But for Marjatta we'll surely make an exception. Thank you for your mediation and the permanent quick reply to our emails.
Kind regard, Gemma
We have had a splendid holiday in Valfabricca. It wonderfully situated and we really appreciated Marjatta's hospitality.
Kind regards, Els
The owners ask for a 30% booking deposit with the balance a month before arrival. Payment is via bank transfer. The security deposit is 100 euro.
From 2013, in Umbria the tourism tax has been introduced. Each town can decide independently whether to apply this tax. It is important to keep in mind that the prices on our website do NOT include the tourism tax. Where we received confirmation from house owners that they have to ask for this tax, it is written underneath the price table.
Villa in Umbria is an intermediary and as such rents out holiday homes and apartments on behalf of their owners. We do not receive any money from clients. When you book we will be sending an agreement in which you will find the bank details of the owners.
We know each vacation rental personally and also the owners of all the holiday rentals we have in our portfolio.
You can read more about us on the 'About Villa in Umbria' page.
