Rebuilt from the stones of a ruined farmhouse, this stupendous villa is an expression of traditional design and modern efficiency, merging with the landscape and framing its many vistas with local stone, terra cotta tiles, and chestnut beams.
There are 4 bedrooms (2 double and 2 triple), 3 bathrooms, 2 fireplaces, a living room downstairs open to the ample modern kitchen, and another sitting room upstairs. Set into the hillside, the house has immediate access to the garden on both levels. There is no TV and no micro wave.
A gentle path leads up to the magnificent "lap" pool in natural stone and sand-colored tiles behind the house, protected by a natural forest, dotted with olive trees, with an even greater view of the valley and the tile roofed back of the house and the limonaia (lemon house).
The vacation home is ideally situated for all kinds of activities. One can go shopping for small groceries on foot and have a coffee in one of the bars of the beautiful medieval town of Penna. Orte is 15 minutes easy drive and from here the train to Rome takes you into Rome centre in 40 minutes. You can visit towns like Orvieto, Viterbo and Amelia all within half an hour drive. There are many old medieval towns and extensive woods, excellent quality food and wines.
A stay in this villa makes it possible to attend to all nice aspects of life, like culture, nature, gastronomy and last but not least, relaxing.
An excellent cook can be arranged, she can come and cook at the house, or also bring freshly prepared food and only finish the cooking for you (or you can do this if you prefer).

Feedback from 2011:
Dear Willemijn and Saskia,
our stay in casale Penna was very pleasant. The swimming pool and house were very clean. The accommodation was very good and the position of the house excellent.
There was a wasp nest close to the terrace which caused come irritation. We also did miss a comfortable chair on the terrace in front of the house.
Your service was very good and many other intermediaries could take an example.
We keep thinking the house is excellent and would like to return.
Best wishes, Johan & Relinde
Hi Willemijn & Saskia,
we were very happy with the house. The views were spectacular, nice to have such a spacious covered veranda and lovely to have Maura cook for us. The village is also nice and very handy to have some shops close by, lovely to be able to go for a drink in the local cafe.
A few possible points of improvement:
- the mattress of the cot was very slim, we solved this by adding a folded blanket so the baby could sleep well and soft.
- the matresses on the Western side of the house could be better.
Best wishes, Marieke
Feedback from 2010:
Dear Saskia & Villemijn,
We were very, very pleased with our stay in Villa Penna. The house was very clean, beautiful, comfortable and exceeded our expectations. Our family enjoyed the quiet setting and the little town of Penna was delightful. We look forward to staying with you again in the future. Thank you so much.
Paul, Heidi R. and family
Dear Saskia!
We would like to tell you that our stay in Umbria was excellent and the villa was perfect for a family with ages ranging from 1 to 76! Thank your tips in finding the villa that suited our needs exacty.
Best Regards. J. R. - G. and family
Dear Saskia & Willemijn,
We rented two houses casale Penna en casa Porcospino.
We were very pleased by both houses and we thoroughly enjoyed our three weeks in Umbria.
Two small remarks.
In Casale Penna both bunkbeds aren't very comfortable with their thin mattresses and in one a wooden floor to support the matrass. Would it be possible to invest in better mattresses and floor? The new deckchairs on the poolside are fantastic! Another idea might be to replace the plastic chairs on the terrace with something more comfortable.
We'd love to return.
Kind regards, M. U.
Dear Saskia and Willemijn,
We liked both houses. Both locations (Casale Penna and Agriturismo Tuoro) are high quality and we especially joined the fantastic views from Penna. The small pictures on your website are an understatement. The only remark we would like to make is that in the dark Penna can be a bit hard to find with three roads which match the description. Maybe it can be improved. Also without wanting to downplay the quality of the houses, a microwave might be a welcome addition. It would enable people with small kids to heat meals au bain marie.
Nothing but praise for your organisation and eye for detail. Very well organised, easy to contact and very attentive to let us know about a possible petrol pump strike. If we are to return to Umbria we will certainly book through you. We will recommend you to other people.
Regards, B.
2009:
Dear Saskia and Willemijn,
The occupants of Casale Penna have nothing left to wish for. We spent a wonderful time there. The only thing that might improve it is a stereo installation so one can play his or her favorite music now and then.
Kind regards, Hans
Hello Willemijn,
Since we also spent a week in Liguria I just started to read my email again.
We had a wonderfull time in Casale Penna!
Marvellous house, beautiful surroundings, all great, again our sincere gratitude for finding the place and taking care of everything.
Regards, Hans
Hi Willemijn,
We had a fantastic week in Casale Penna, such a beautiful location and a lovely house, please pass on my thanks to the owners.
Once again thank you very much for your assistance, it has been a wonderful experience dealing with you.
Best Regards, Billy
Hello Willemijn,
It has been a week since we returned from Italy. I just found some time to sent this mail as we had a busy week due to the Nijmeegse vierdaagse.
We had a wonderfull stay in the villa. We thought it was beautiful. In fact more beautifuel than expected from our visits to the website.
Especially the pool proofs to be even better. We have made some pictures that I'll sent you. They might come in handy.
The pictures of the house are a bit dark because I've taken them at dusk. The light is always beautiful then if a bit to dark for taking pictures. The one of the pool shows how wonderful and big it is and how well it is situated between the olive trees. The view from the terrace is splendid. You have a nice view of the city of Orte. We thought the furnishing of the house quite tasteful. The house is well build and nicely decorated. The only small inconvenience was that depending on the direction of the wind we could hear some noise from the freeway and railroadtrack. We made a lot of excursions. An excellently situated place! Towards the end of our holiday we also talked to the owner of the place. A verry likable lady.
Lots of thanks for the wonderful guidance and good luck to you there in italy!
Greetings, Sylvia and Emmanuel
Dear Willemijn,
We have had a fantastic vacation in Penna! What a great place, the problem with the poolchairs was properly solved. The owner had bought 4 deck chairs at the Coop wich proved to meet our needs.
We would like to make a reservation for next year. WIll you let us know if the price will remain the same?
Kind regards, Marjolijne
Good morning Willemijn and Saskia,
We had a wonderful vacation in Casale Penna. The house met all our requirements and the contact with the custodian and owner was verry good. Any problems were adequately solved. The acquired table tennis table was a great succes; great we were able to do it in this way.
Because most of the time is spent outside garden chairs which provide a bit more comfort would be welcome, more like a arm chair model. And the number of deckchairs at the pool was on the low side. Our group consisted of 8 grown ups and there were 4 chairs, wich did proof to be verry comfortable. The other 3 chairs were more for children and proofed to be to small for us. Parasols would be wellcome. we ended up shifting the table and chairs a bit under the olive trees.
Furthermore the house is well situated; you can just walk into the village for some groceries and the little bar. There are a lot of things organised for the villagers wich nevertheless do not cause any inconveniences.
As a guest of the house one can also take part. And the train in Orte is fabulous. We used it all the time for our trips to Rome, Terontola and Orvieto.
All in all a great succes.
Kind regards, Marieken
Comment owner: there will be 10 outside relaxing chairs or sunbeds available
