In case you cannot find an answer to your questions in the information, or in case something is not working properly. Please call the caretakers and they will be able to explain or will come up and repair the item that is not working.

The key

The keys can be found under a stone in the pizza oven in front of the entrance door to Il Riccio.
Please leave the key in the same spot the day you are leaving.

Arrival in the dark

In case you think you might arrive after dark, please make sure you have a good torch with you so you will not have any trouble finding the key and the path up to the entrance of the apartment.

Please note that the electricity can be switched on in the kitchen, on the left entering the apartment. Turn left and left again. The switch must be up.

Directions

Coming from the North

Take the E45 from Cesena to Roma, take the exit Citta di Castello Nord.
At the bottom of the exit, turn left (direction Centro), on the roundabout, follow for the Zona Industriale (meaning you drive three quarters of the roundabout).
Take the 3rd road right, called 'Via P. Borsellino' (you will see a tyre company on the left corner).
Keep going straight, pass the railway crossing. On the roundabout go straight in direction Badiali.
Keep following this road (you will pass San Stefano del Piano and Badiale).
You will come to a T-junction with on the right a church. You will turn left here and the first road right (in direction of Vallurbana).
Keep following the road until you arrive in Vallurbana.
Turn left opposite the white house on the right hand side of the road (this is a very sharp turn taking you up, if you have trouble making this turn you can drive on and turn your car on the square). Follow this tar road until the small church (i.e. turn right at the top, sharp turn) . At the church you will have to turn into the white road on the left (again a sharp turn). Keep following this road to the right and it will take you up to the house in a few hundred meters. Please make sure you drive up steadily and in first gear!

Coming from the South

Take Orte the E45 in direction Perugia – Cesena. Follow for Cesena when close to Perugia. Take the second exit for Citta di Castello, Citta di Castello Nord. At the bottom of the exit, turn right. The rest of the directions are as above.

Other

In case of emergencies, whilst at the house, contact the custodians Jim and Caroline Stewardson +390758569574 or mobile +393331215457.

Various electricity boxes exist, both in the house and grounds – above the fridge, outside next to the pump room and also at the bottom of the pool in the front garden. If you have no power or if the power goes off check and re-set the trip switches in these areas.

We generally don’t drink water from the tap, though others do.

The washing machine is in the pump room – feel free to use it – you may need to turn its water supply on (see right-hand wall).

LPG use for cooking and hot water is included in the rental.

Use of the central heating during the winter months is charged in addition to the rental, depending upon usage. To activate the central heating just adjust the wall thermostat.

Wood is also available for the open fire – let us know if you want a load ordered (approx €100). If the fire hasn’t been used for a while the chimney will need to warm up, so expect a smoky room initially! Keep a door or window slightly open.

Rubbish should be taken to one of the roadside bins (green / blue) in evidence in the locality – there are a couple in Vallurbana – turn left when you come down from the house and you’ll see them. Some bins are for recyclable material, therefore we suggest you keep bottles and tins separate from organic waste.

The cleaners generally arrive around 10am on the day of departure, ready to set the house up for the next arrivals. Please be in a position to vacate the apartment and allow them access by this time.

If you would like a taxi for an excursion or evening restaurant run then we can recommend an English friend of ours, Martin Stephenson mobile +393384732000.

The nearest café is Il Torrione in the village. Luigi just opened up in May 2007, so please do support his enterprise. The restaurant is very good too, all cucina tipica and no menus or labels on the wine! The nearest shop is at Bar Felix in Badiali. The people there are very friendly and you can even get a beer and coffee in the bar! However, we would suggest that you do your main shopping in town. As well as several supermarkets in Citta di Castello there’s a good COOP in Umbertide too.

Trains go from Lama and Citta di Castello to Umbertide and Perugia.

Market days in Citta di Castello are Saturdays and Thursdays.

If you’d like a good view of Citta di Castello you can climb the Civic Tower (the square one) – splendid in clear morning light. A ticket to the museum (next to the cathedral) allows access to this too. May be open now after renovation.

Wines: Umbriade Rosso is as cheap as chips but a real taste of the region, for something more upmarket go for Montefalco Rosso – several varieties. Prosecco is delicious well-chilled, Italians drink this on arrival at parties – Valdo is a good one.

Pecorino sheep’s cheese – loads of different types, from dry to soft, is another speciality.

Umbrian pork sausages are excellent – buy from the supermarket or from one of the porchetta vans you’ll see at the market. The other one to look out for is Wild Boar, though these are more expensive and less common.

If you’re after a cheap but cheerful and very good meal you could do a lot worse than Pizzeria Roma di Mauro et Fez, just off the main Piazza in Citta di Castello.
