In western Umbria hidden away in a green and hilly landscape is the Castle of Montegiove. It sits on top of a hill overlooking its large grounds. On these grounds, underneath the castle the Podere Montegiove welcomes its guests in a tranquil and comfortable atmosphere.
The peace and quietness of this rural environment in combination with the modern comfort of the Podere Montegiove guarantees a relaxing holiday that will be remembered for long.
The host is a Dutch lady who recently restored this old farm which now is a bed and breakfast. She also speaks english. On the ground floor is a spacious and modern holiday apartment overlooking the garden and the very particular swimming pond. The water in this pond is cleaned naturally and is a wonderful experience to swim in. It is oval and 12 by 8 meters large. The deepest point is in the centre and is 2.5 meters. Via stone steps one can enter into the water. It is always open, but not heated.
The Podere Montegiove is at 20 minutes from Fabro and the entrance to the A1 which takes you within 2 hours to either Florence or Rome. Orvieto is a 45 minutes drive, Lake Trasimeno can also be reached in 45 minutes, Città della Pieve is 30 minutes away, Perugia and Todi about 1 hour. In less then 10 minutes one can reach the very particular gardens of Scarzuola, that can only be visited after appointment.
Arriving at the Podere Montegiove one immediately notices the swimming pond that seems to disappear in its environment. The owner has three small dogs that happily welcome each visitor.
The rental unit is all ground floor and has a well equipped kitchen with small fridge, 4 electrical plates to cook and an oven. No dishwasher. From the kitchen one reaches the covered terrace which table and chairs and here there also is the antique wood oven. Next to the kitchen is a double bedroom with a door leading to the garden. Opposite of this bedroom is the bathroom with sink, toilet and bathtub. The shower is in the bath.
A few steps lead down into the spacious and comfortable living room. To one side is the sitting area with open fire place and to the other side a dining table with chairs. This is an open and very light space, comfortable and tastefully furnished. To one side of this living room is the other bedroom with either two or three single beds or one double bed. From the living room large glass doors lead into the garden.
The whole house is tastefully and comfortably furnished to guarantee a relaxing holiday in the Umbrian hills. The host regularly makes fresh bread and if guests would want to she is an excellent cook and can organise lunch or dinner, as well as interesting trips in the area. One can take a dog here, but this dog needs to be well trained and social. The owner has three small dogs herself.
In the main house the owner lives and there are also two extra rooms with bathroom for guests. Parking is on the premises and the last 300 meters to the house are not tarred but in good condition.
There is a washing machine and wifi internet.
Your host also is a chef. She can cook a meal for you for the evening of your arrival or any other evening you prefer.
Regularly your host makes her own fresh bread. You can order this for euro 3,00 per bread.
One can participate in several activities that can also be personalised:
Already in Etruscan times (7e - 5e century b.C.) the Umbrians made their own wine. In Tuscany and umbra official wine tours have been made, clearly signposted. To avoid the mass tourism, your host can also take you to small wine producers chosen and tested by her. Hereyou can literally taste the personal involvement of the wine producer. The all day wine tour costs euro 175 per day, per person and are inclusive of a full lunch and transport.
Your host, Adje, is a very skilled gourmet cook, with many years’ experience. She is now turning to cooking for private customers, and will come into your home and completely take over for a lunch, dinner or an outdoor meal. But you can also come to Podere del Buon Gustaio for lunch or dinner. She specializes in what she calls ‘fusion cooking’, a blend of the very best of international cookery. She loves cooking Oriental dishes, delicious ice cream, a wonderful variety of bread… and of course Umbrian cooking.
Your host enjoys sharing her knowledge of the local cuisine using fresh local products as much as possible. Depending on the menu and the number of participants the price is from euro 50 per person including the lunch or dinner with wine, water and coffee.
Hunting for truffles and other mushrooms
In the immediate surroundings of the podere it is possible to find truffles and other mushrooms. Your host can assist you together with a truffle hunter to go and find you own truffles. If you wish this can be followed by a cooking course using the truffles and mushrooms found. Depending on whether guests would want the cooking course and amount of participants, truffle hunting costs from euro 30 per person.
This activity can only be organised in November when it is the time for olive picking and the production of the olive oil. At the podere there are 200 olive trees and guests are welcome to join the olive picking. A very Italian tradition.
