In the antique village of Silvignano, near Spoleto, the English owners of the Villa Silvignano have created an enchanting holiday home. A modern villa has been made in an authentic stone house dating back to the 16th century: stylish, colourful and comfortable.

The eye-catcher is the modern conservatory or winter terrace that is made at the front. From here the view over the valley is breathtaking. Especially, in spring and autumn this is a warm shelter when it gets cooler in the evening. It is furnished with two large sofas, and a dining table which can also be used as a quiet work area. The woodburner allows this room to be used all year-round.

From this conservatory you enter the dining room and kitchen, with a small cosy sitting area in front of a wood burning open fire. This spacious modern kitchen contrasts sharply with the old ceiling with arches and the small corridor once carved by hand leading to an ancient storage cave. The kitchen has a dishwasher, large refrigerator, a gas stove and everything you need to prepare a delicious Italian meal. Perhaps with the fresh truffle purchased earlier in the day in Campello.

A small lobby provides a sense of privacy to the master bedroom suite with a king size bed and french doors directly to the garden and another travertine lined shower room with large rain head shower and heated mirror above large hand carved basin.

Downstairs also is a small laundry area with a washer drier.

A staircase goes to the first floor with two more bedrooms. These bedrooms have air conditioning. One bedroom has two sturdy bunk beds and the other room has two single beds that can also be made into a double bed. These two bedrooms share the bathroom with rain shower.

The comfortable living room runs the full length of the house with two distinct sitting areas either side of a large stone fireplace; one for the smart TV and the other perfect for quiet reading or socialising. Each end of the room has doors opening to different outdoor areas; at one end to a cool stone upper garden area, at the other end a large roof terrace furnished with sofas and tables and overlooking two valleys, from which you can see the sunset. There are two bookcases of books and DVDs making this the perfect room for everyone to gather.

All rooms have a ceiling fan and fly screens.

Through the garden with a wisteria covered pergola, you walk to the driveway where one or two cars can be parked. You exit here and only 30 meters away is the olive grove belonging to the house, where the owners have built a swimming pool 15 by 4 metres and 1.5 metres deep. Also here the views are spectacular and wandering through the olive grove you may find wild asparagus and garlic when in season.

The springs of Clitunno are just 10 minutes from Silvignano. The Fonti di Clitunno is the source of the river Clitunno, in Roman times it was an impressive waterway connected to the Tiber. It is now the most important source of water in Umbria, producing 1500 liters of water per second. The nature reserve belonging to these sources surely is worth a visit.
