Markets in Umbria: a weekly feast for the senses
Umbria, Italy’s green heart, is adored not only for its breathtaking landscapes and historic charm but also for the lively markets that brighten every town and village. If you are seeking an authentic Italian experience or simply keen to taste your way through the region’s finest local delights, the markets of Umbria should top your holiday itinerary. From just-picked produce to handmade crafts and hidden antiques, you will uncover treasures to delight every traveller’s heart.
Week after week, the Umbrian markets spring to life with an incredible array of stalls. Whether you crave crisp, sun-ripened vegetables, locally produced cheeses, savoury charcuterie or even stylish garments, you will find it here. Each town sets up on its own schedule, but they all share one thing: an early start. Arrive around 7.30 AM to bag the best produce (especially in high season), before the crowds gather. By 1 PM, most stalls begin to pack up, so set your alarm and go early.

Local flair, laid-back vibes and organic food
For Italians the market is more than a shopping errand, it is a social ritual. Neighbours catch up as they fill baskets with seasonal delights such as pecorino cheese and spicy salami. Try the porchetta, succulent roast pork seasoned to perfection, which you will spot on every market. It is the ultimate comfort food. In summer, you will rub shoulders with fellow tourists; in winter, you will feel part of the inner circle, swapping tips with locals on where to find the sweetest olives or the ripest tomatoes.
More than just food: crafts and antiques
Beyond the everyday markets, Umbria hosts a treasure trove of speciality fairs. In Perugia the last weekend of each month brings handcrafted ceramics and bespoke jewellery to the streets before relocating to the atmospheric Rocca Paolina in winter. Bastia Umbra launches each season with a showcase of regional crafts, while Todi’s annual antique fair draws dealers from around the globe. Spoleto holds its craft market every month and in Città di Castello you will unearth vintage gems each third Sunday. Whether you are hunting for a one-of-a-kind souvenir or a centuries-old keepsake, you will not leave empty-handed.

Plan your market adventure
Heading to Umbria? Make room in your schedule for at least one market morning. It is the best way to immerse yourself in local life and sample authentic Umbrian flavours. Picture yourself lounging on the terrace of your private villa, cheese and cured meats on your plate, a glass of full-bodied Sagrantino in hand… pure bliss.
