La Festa della Cipolla in Cannara is a big food event at the end of the Umbrian summer. It has become quite famous among Italians who travel far to participate. The small village of Cannara is situated in the valley not far from the famous town of Assisi and near the cosy village of Spello.
Every year the smell of baked and cooked onion spreads through the streets of Cannara, making you feel hungry instantly. There are five taverns, and small outside restaurants, set up in tents in the village. The food in all these taverns is excellent and prepared with the local onions for which the Cannara area is famous.
How does it work?
Before you walk into a tavern you must leave your name to make a reservation. You should wait until somebody will call you to enter the tavern. A volunteer will guide you to your table. One of the waiters will wait for you and serves you throughout the evening.
There is both beer and wine during the event and all the food is served on plastic plates and dishes.
The onion event in Cannara runs smoothly thanks to all the volunteers. I visited many food events in Italy, but I have never seen such a big food event in Italy as La Festa della Cipolla in Cannara.
This year was the 38th edition of the Festa della Cipolla, and like every year chef, Gianfranco Vissani was the main protagonist. Vissani is an Italian top chef and has his own restaurant with Michelin Star near Orvieto. He is popular and a personality, often seen on Italian television.
The gastronomic event La Festa della Cipolla is a moment of entertainment, music and games. Tourists and locals have the opportunity to spend their evenings surrounded by music and culture. A local experience not to be missed during the last summer evenings of the year in Umbria.
