The Marmore waterfalls, near Terni in Umbria, are a spectacular piece of Umbria. At a whopping 165 metres high, they are among the highest artificial waterfalls in the world. This impressive natural phenomenon is perfect for a day trip and provides heavenly refreshment on hot summer days.
A bit of history
The story of the Marmore Falls dates back to the third century BC when the Romans dug a clever canal to drain water from a swampy area. This canal still brings water to the falls, which cascade down in three impressive stages.
Over the centuries, the Velino and Nera rivers caused quite a stir: Rieti wanted to drain the water, while Terni feared flooding. Only in 1922 was an ingenious system devised to supply the waterfall with water and generate electricity for Terni’s industry. This system, in which water from the rivers is collected in the lake of Piediluco and then led to Terni through an ingenious system of canals, still works today.
Hiking trails and viewpoints
The Marmore Falls are in a nature reserve with six mapped hiking routes that take you past the most beautiful spots. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or heading out with the family, there is a suitable route for everyone.
- Sentiero/route 1 is the most challenging route. The 45-minute trail takes you through the forest to the top of the waterfall and offers an altitude difference of 150 metres. Highly recommended for those who want to get close to the swirling water.
- Sentiero/route 2 and 3 are ideal for families with children. These shorter hiking trails (about 20 minutes) are easy to walk and offer beautiful views.
Along the routes you will find special viewpoints such as the *Balcone degli Innamorati* (The Lovers Balcony, only visitable with a guide), a romantic spot near the waterfall, and the *Specola*, where you have a breathtaking view over the valley.
Practical tips for your visit
- The Marmore Falls are not continuously active. Sirens warn 15 minutes before the water is released. This moment, when the water plunges with a thunderous roar, is an unforgettable experience (spectacular holiday photos guaranteed!). Check opening times in advance and make sure you are ready in time for the spectacle!
- There are two entrances to the park, Belvedere Superiore (upper part) and Belvedere Inferiore (lower part), large car parks are provided at both spots.
- You can buy your ticket in advance online (recommended during busy holiday periods) or just on the spot.
- You can take a rain poncho with you if you like, or buy one at the entrance. It’s very handy if you like to get close to the waterfall.
- In summer, a shuttle bus runs between the two entrances, but walking along the forest path is a nice alternative.
- This handy map shows where the hiking trails run and the parking areas.
Additional activities
Besides hiking, you can also enjoy water sports such as rafting, kayaking and hydrospeed in the area.
There are bars where you can buy a drink, ice cream or sandwich. A picnic in this beautiful nature reserve is also a must.
The multimedia museum Hydra offers an immersive journey through the history of Marmore Falls, brought to life with video mapping, projections and augmented reality.
