Narni definitely deserves a place on your Umbria itinerary. This atmospheric medieval town lies in southern Umbria, high above the valley of the Nera River. Wander through its narrow streets, discover a fascinating underground world, and just a few minutes’ drive away, explore Stifone, a hidden natural gem where you can enjoy a beautiful kayaking trip.
If you are looking for sightseeing in Umbria away from the better-known tourist destinations, Narni is an excellent choice. It combines history, nature, authentic Italian atmosphere and some of the most unusual activities in Umbria.
Why Narni is so special
Narni sits on a strategic hilltop overlooking the green Nera Valley. The views alone make the journey worthwhile. Inside the old city walls, time seems to have stood still. Narrow streets, ancient gateways, charming squares and authentic restaurants create a typically Italian atmosphere, without the crowds you find in some of Umbria’s better-known towns.
The name Narni may sound familiar. This is no coincidence. During Roman times, the town was known as Narnia. According to the biography of C.S. Lewis, the writer discovered the name on an old map of Italy and later used it as inspiration for his world-famous Chronicles of Narnia series.
A rich history
Narni’s history stretches back more than two thousand years. People were already living in the caves around the town in prehistoric times. Later, the Umbrians settled here and called the settlement Nequinum.
In 299 BC, the Romans conquered the town after a lengthy siege. Thanks to its strategic position along the Via Flaminia, Narni developed into an important trading and defensive centre. Today, traces of this rich history can still be discovered throughout the historic centre.
Wander and get lost
Narni is one of those towns where the best way to explore is simply to walk. Wander through the narrow alleyways, admire the old façades and stop occasionally at a café or terrace. Around every corner, you may find another beautiful view or charming little square.

Discover Narni Underground
Hidden beneath the town is another fascinating world. During a visit to Narni Sotterranea, you can explore underground passages, discover an ancient church, former prison cells and rooms that were used during the Inquisition.
The tour is undoubtedly one of the most unusual things to do in Narni and reveals a completely different side of the town. For adventurous visitors, there is also the possibility of exploring an underground Roman aqueduct; an experience guaranteed to add a little adrenaline to your day!
Stifone: a hidden gem on the Nera River
Just five minutes by car from Narni lies the tiny village of Stifone. Centuries ago, this was the site of a Roman river port, with boats being built along the riverbanks. Several water mills also played an important role in the local economy.
Today, Stifone is best known for its crystal-clear, emerald-green water. Even simply stopping to admire the river is worthwhile.
Our tip: explore Stifone by kayak
During our most recent visit to Narni, we decided to take a kayaking trip from Stifone, and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable activities in Umbria we have experienced recently.
You paddle along the peaceful Nera River, surrounded by lush vegetation and water in beautiful shades of green and blue. Along the way, you pass ancient waterworks and the remains of a Roman shipyard, a unique archaeological site that can be admired particularly well from the water.
The trip takes around 75 minutes. Thanks to the gentle current, you don’t need to be an experienced kayaker. On a hot summer’s day, it is also a wonderful way to cool down while experiencing the Umbrian landscape from a completely different perspective.
Where to eat in Narni
After exploring the historic centre, it is time for a long Italian lunch or a relaxed evening on a terrace.
We ate at I Ghibellini, an atmospheric trattoria-pizzeria in the heart of Narni. The terrace overlooking the valley makes it a particularly lovely place to relax with a good glass of wine and a plate of local specialities.
If you are looking for authentic restaurants in Umbria, Narni is a great place to include in your itinerary. Rather than focusing on tourist restaurants, look for the traditional trattorias and pizzerias tucked away in the historic centre.

Narni is perfect for a day trip and can easily be combined with other beautiful places in the surrounding area.
- The Cascate delle Marmore, the highest man-made waterfalls in Europe, are around 20 minutes away by car. Expect an impressive combination of water, nature and spectacular scenery.
- Carsulae is one of the most beautiful Roman archaeological sites in Umbria. Wander among ancient temples, thermal baths and a Roman theatre, all surrounded by countryside.
From many of our holiday homes, Narni can be reached in around an hour by car. This makes it an ideal destination for a varied day of sightseeing in Umbria, combining culture, nature, history and good food.
