Our most fanatic residential mushroom hunter gave a little present last week. After a long story with the bottom line: “you are not supposed to give mushrooms you’ve found to other people because you might give the wrong ones”, we were handed a mushroom I’d never seen before.
It was yellow and looked somewhat like an eggyolk. ‘Ovulo’ he said. It was to be grated or sliced very thinly and then dressed with the usual olive oil, lemon and salt. After having spend about an hour doing research on the net we decided it was comestible. The Amanita Caesarea is a highly regarded mushroom with very good be it subtle flavour. You are warned everywhere against picking it since it can be easily confused with other members of the Amanitaceae family who are poisonous. This one however was very nice.
