Welcome to Castiglione del Lago, the picturesque jewel of Lake Trasimeno. Rightly acclaimed as one of the borghi più belli, the most beautiful villages in the country, this walled town in Umbria is a cozy holiday paradise.
Charming acquaintance
Once you’ve climbed the steps to the historic center, the Italian charm awaits you. At the top of Piazza Dante Alighieri, you can enjoy a 360° panorama. Surrounding villages right in front of you, Lake Trasimeno on your right, and when you turn around, the Porta Senese, one of the three city gates, beckons. In the pastel-colored main street, Via Vittorio Emanuele, you can stroll past shops full of local products. Salumi, tasty cheeses, the fagiolini (beans) del Trasimeno, and the succulent local wines: taste, smell and be seduced. The Bar Centrale on the scenic Piazza Mazzini is the perfect place for an aperitif.
On and in the Rocca del Leone
Browsing in the main street leads you to the Piazza Antonio Gramsci with the medieval fortress of Castiglione del Lago, la Rocca del Leone. Start your visit in the Palazzo della Corgna, the frescoed halls are a good warm-up for your senses. Recommended for young and old: you can walk on and in the walls of the castle. Let your imagination run wild and aim with your imagined bow and arrow through the loopholes. The panorama over the deep blue lake is wonderful. In summer, the courtyard of the Rocca turns into an open-air theater and cinema under the stars, a unique experience!
Island hopping for a day
On the shores of the lake (Lungolago) you can stroll along the water or take the ferry to two islands scattered in Lake Trasimeno. Isola Polvese is surrounded by an oasis of silence, combined with the most romantic sunsets. On Isola Maggiore, the atmosphere of the fishing village of yesteryear still slumbers, there are a few nice restaurants and you can enjoy a peaceful walk.
Heavenly hospitality
In Castiglione del Lago, one restaurant is even more inviting than the other. For example, you can join L’Angolo del Buon Gustaio, where Riccardo spoils you with a tagliere, accompanied by the perfect glass of wine. Or enjoy handmade pasta and Chianina meat with the ladies of la Scuola elementare della pasta. For slow food and a Michelin Bib Gourmand address you have to go to L’Acquario, the oldest restaurant in the village.
You can also enjoy yourself along the shore of the lake. At Il Pescatore you wake up with a cappuccino or start the evening with a cocktail in hand. At Il Pontile there is a hip lounge atmosphere, you choose from a menu with tapas and enjoy the view and summer music. In the recently reopened La Pigra Tinca you can enjoy tasty specialties in a beautiful setting, with a view of the calming Lago Trasimeno.
