Christmas magic in Umbria: a festive wonderland
In the heart of Italy, Umbria transforms into a magical wonderland during the Christmas season. Picturesque towns and villages, such as Gubbio and Castiglione del Lago, spare no effort to claim their spots as the most enchanting Christmas destinations. Every corner comes alive with beautiful nativity scenes, lively Christmas markets, and festive events.
Christmas in Assisi: magic and light
Assisi shines during the Christmas season with a wonderful selection of nativity scenes and festive magic. You’ll find atmospheric nativity scenes in picturesque spots all over the city. In the Santa Maria degli Angeli church, you can admire the Presepi del Mondo, an international collection of nativity scenes. A definite highlight is the nativity scene of light: impressive video projections on the Basilica di San Francesco, inspired by Giotto’s frescoes, bring the Christmas story to life. For an extra dose of charm, you can enjoy authentic living nativity scenes in villages such as Armenzano and Petrignano.
Together with the light shows, Christmas markets and music, Assisi is the ideal setting for an unforgettable Christmas.
Special Christmas trees in Umbria
Largest Christmas tree in the world (Gubbio)
Gubbio, proudly known as “Gubbio è Natale,” stands out as a Christmas village par excellence. For decades, dedicated volunteers start in September and work tirelessly to transform Gubbio into the perfect setting for a festive Christmas movie. Gubbio boasts a unique attraction during the Christmas period—the world’s largest Christmas tree, shining brightly with colorful lights over the city from Monte Ingino. The beautifully decorated Christmas train, ‘Gubbio Express,’ takes you on a journey through the entire city, and you can even catch a unique view from the Ferris wheel. Climbing the tree/mountain is also an option, walking among the lights up Monte Ingino towards the star.
Luci sul Trasimeno (Castiglione del Lago)
Castiglione del Lago, nestled in the heart of Umbria, is ambitious in its Christmas celebrations. While Gubbio claims the record for the world’s largest Christmas tree, Castiglione del Lago presents a unique spectacle—a floating Christmas tree, the world’s largest, on the water of Lake Trasimeno. This extraordinary display involves 165 support poles, 7 kilometers of electricity cables, and 2,559 lights. A visit to the tree and the city during December promises a winter village experience with an ice rink, nativity scenes, and a dazzling light show in the Rocca del Leone.
