Last week I was invited to come to Montefalco where the owners of La Vigna, an agriturismo near Saragano in Umbria, were to expose their wines at Enologica. This is a wine tasting event to celebrate the grape harvest and the production of yet again new top wines in the Montefalco area.
The wines of La Vigna or Il Torrione have become quality wines. They produce white and red wines, the Rosso di Montefalco and of course the Sagrantino di Montefalco. The latter is a typical Umbrian wine, lately getting much more attention internationally.
Antonio and An were also there themselves and though it was very busy we got to taste some of their top quality wines.
The grape harvest is also celebrated by the surrounding farmer communities who enter town with their tractors. That is: I imagine that’s how it was, now it felt a bit like carnaval with a wine theme. Groups of often young people, all dressed up behind loud and antique tractors occupied the main square. We enjoyed the festivities with a drink and very typically Italian: towards dinner time everybody went home or to a restaurant and the sweepers immediately started cleaning the main square.
