The Sibillini mountains are a mountain group in Italy, part of the central Appennines. The Sibillini are situated between Eastern Umbria and the Marche. In the central Italian Appennine mountains is a large plateau the “Piano Grande” (1400m). The piano is flanked by mountains, the highest of which is the Monte Vettore (2476m). What a view! On a high rock is the village of Castellucio di Norcia in the middle of the Piano Grande. It is a beautiful village and famous for its delicate lentils. This National Park is a fabulous place for bikers, cyclists and paragliders. An ideal destination for those who want to avoid mass tourism.
Visitors in June can experience a stunning view when the Piano Grande is like an enormous bed of colorful blossoms of the lentil plants!
I joined a hiking trip with snowshoes in the Canatra valley of the Monti Sibillini National Park “Valle Canatra nel Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini”. An organized tour by Trekking in Umbria with snowshoes in the unspoiled nature of the Sibillini National Park. The guide from Trekking in Umbria lives in Terni, Umbria. His name is Alessio. We were with a small group: me, Alessio, Valerio and Sara. We started behind the village of Castellucio di Norcia, in the Marche. From there we walked through the “lentil” fields with our snowshoes in our backpack towards the slopes of the mountains. Arriving on the trail, we needed to put on our snowshoes. A quantity of fresh snow has been fallen! The route went up, and the further we walked up the mountain, the more snow we came across. We enjoyed the silence. The highlight of the tour was climbing the mountain Poggio di Croce where we had our picnic lunch with bread, sausage, water and a chocolate bar. From there we had a fantastic view of the Piano Grande and the entire Appennines, Lazio – Umbria – Marche and Abruzzo. Really breathtaking!
On our way back we walked on an “easy” path towards the village Castellucio. From there I have made some amazing pictures of the village and the large plateau.
Thanks to Valerio, Sara and Alessio (guide) I enjoyed the hike in the Monti Sibillini National Park. Listening to stories about the Monti Sibillini by Alessio and being in good company made the trip complete.
This tour in the mountains is accessible to everybody. Even for children (sportive children). In Spring and Summer this tour will be offered by Trekking in Umbria.
